Ranil Wickramasinghe pledges support to face Pakistan’s floods


Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has expressed his grief to Pakistani Prime Minister Shebash Sharif regarding the massive disaster caused by heavy rains in Pakistan.

Pakistan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said this during a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister.

A third of the country is inundated

Heavy rains in Pakistan have flooded one third of the country. So far more than 1,200 people have died and the army has rescued 2,000 people in a single day.

Monsoon started in Pakistan last June. Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been experiencing unprecedented rainfall for the last 3 months.

The largest river in Pakistan Floods in the Indus River Runs aground. A third of the country is completely flooded.

More than 1,200 people have died so far. 7 lakh cattle have died. More than 3.3 crore people have been affected by the floods.

Rain-related infectious diseases are spreading at an alarming rate, around 20 lakh acres of crops have been destroyed, 5,000 km. Long-distance roads have been damaged and cut off, and more than 250 bridges have been washed away. More than 10 lakh houses have been destroyed.

10,000 Pakistani soldiers flood relief work

More than 10,000 soldiers are working day and night in all the 4 provinces to rescue the victims.

In a statement released yesterday, the Army Chief said:

Soldiers have been involved in the rescue operation since last June. So far, we have rescued 50,000 people who were stranded in the flood and accommodated them in relief camps.

Of these, 1,000 people were rescued through rescuers. In the last 24 hours, we have rescued 2,000 people who were trapped in the flood.

As the Meteorological Center has announced that the rains will continue till September, we are speeding up the rescue work. Army doctors are serving the people in the relief camps. This was stated by the army chief.

According to Akhtar Hussain, a scientist at ComSATs University in Pakistan,

“Pakistan is witnessing record rainfall due to climate variability. The snow peaks of the Himalayas have melted and caused massive floods in the Indus River.

This has led to disaster. To prevent this, the temperature should be controlled.

Otherwise, the snow peaks of the Himalayas will melt and cause huge impacts in this region,” he said.
