Loksabha Elections 2024: The bamboo and cane crafts of Bihar have a rich historical past that blends with the preferences of modern urban people. Since Bihar is rich in the tradition of powerful dynasties like Magadha Majanapada, Maurya Empire and Gupta Empire, the artisans were encouraged by them. With the introduction of modern technologies, bamboo and cane crafts of Bihar have flourished. With the passage of time the tradition of the past and the style of the modern era have developed the culture of bamboo and cane crafts of Bihar. This has led to subtle changes in products as well as high-end improvements. Tribal people of Trans-Himalayan region who are skilled in bamboo and cane art. The huge variety of baskets, cups, saucers made by them for local consumption has now found an export market and given the financial assurance from these crafts, non-tribals are now taking up basket making as their profession. The designs of these bamboo and cane crafts vary from simple plain weaving or ribbing to sometimes painting the bamboo-strips or cane reed in bright colours. They live in dilapidated houses and receive daily wages for their work, which is how they have been working for generations. When we visited the Banskhor community of Bhagalpur, they told us how they view their right to vote, their business and what the new India means to them today.
